Tax on building materials could help fund asbestos removal, Federal Government advisory body says

A tax on building materials is being proposed as a way to fund the removal of asbestos from millions of homes across Australia.

An estimated one in three houses across the country contain asbestos, but getting rid of the dangerous substance can be expensive.

The Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency (ASEA), established by the government in 2013, believes subsidies are needed to encourage home owners to take action.

Chief executive officer Peter Tighe said the money spent could be clawed back through a small levy on building materials.
